NEED PCGS population Numbers on SPOUSES
If anyone has the time and ACCESS, of course.
TIA I JUST have access to NGC. I'd do PCGS too; but last time I tried to use their services they lost my 11 Saint Gaudens for 8 weeks, sadly. :signs14: :thumb.aspx: |

Hope u can make heads or tails o' that.
Looks like a high rate of 70s for the MS and somewhat lower for the Proofs |

hernancortes, if you don't mind me asking, did you pick up an 09 Buffalo proof?

Re: NEED PCGS population Numbers on SPOUSES
These numbers are pretty surprising. What are the actual mintage figures? I cant imagine this series will be carried thru to completion so some of these coins could become scarce to actually rare over time. If the mintage figures are as low as I am suspecting, putting a few of these away for the long, long term could be worthwhile.

http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Bas...ion=MS&print=1 I hope that works for NGC populations HS People all have different reasons for looking/figuring populations. I see that NGC has way more of the 20K minted per coin. Thanks HERNANCORTES |

I slept and didn't start a full-series collection when it would've been easy to do. I can see a full collection of PCGS MS/PR70 Au Buffs across all denominations designs and mintmarks being worth alot of dough someday. |

Re: NEED PCGS population Numbers on SPOUSES
Mint Statistics from November:
http://numismaster.com/images/upload...argImg8400.jpg Notice the Jackson unc. came in with total mintage at 4754. That makes it the third sub-5000 mintage in the series, following the Louisa Adams unc. at 4,223 and the Elizabeth Monroe unc. at 4,519. With less than a month to go on the Van Burens, I am betting they come in sub-5000 also. NOTE: the proofs all have higher than 5000 mintage, so if your criteria is sub-5000, don't get the proofs. |
Re: NEED PCGS population Numbers on SPOUSES
Wow, they made 208,206 SPOUSES in several years (104,103 ounces)
that sure beats parting with 1 million plus ounces per YEAR of the long gone US treasury gold for: 1 oz. Eagle Proofs & Eagle MS 1/2 Eagles PF & MS 1/4 Eagle PF & MS 1/10 Eagles PF & MS Buffalos same 8 coins to date except for the PF now at record high in four hours same as 2008! I think it's really nice they can make the extra money on these now too. :signs14::rose: Feeling like a GRUMPY old collector...... after paying twice what I could have got them for last APRIL! On the positive side really check out the NUMBERS on the LOUSY SPOUS"E" |
Re: NEED PCGS population Numbers on SPOUSES
I really love coins, I enjoy the history and thinking about who handled them and what the world was like when they were being used in circulation. So with that thinking in mind, I want to play devil's advocate regarding the First Spouse Series. This is something I try to do with myself before buying any coin that I dont actually love or feel I "need" for my collection.
As a series, this is a dog. Really no other way to describe it. A really poor concept that hasn't grabbed anyone's attention, never mind stirred up any excitement. I would be very surprised if all of the conceptualized coins in the series ever get minted, particularly with the the pinch the mint is in with producing adequate numbers of GAEs. This can be seen as a plus or a minus as far as future rarity/value goes. There have been many other circulating series as well as commemoratives that were produced, saw little acceptance by the public and today still are obscure even to Numismatists. As such there is a very thin market for them and they dont increase in value very much year to year. On the other hand these things look to be headed the direction of the DoDo Bird and will be quite unique. Another aspect to consider is the Au value. On the surface this is a plus. I have little doubt it is up up and away. But if that is what I am banking on to provide the kick for this, why not just buy a straight bullion product and save the premium? Additionally, the increased cost of these pieces d/t Au content further narrows the potential market. Lastly, if I buy any of these, who do I foresee wanting to buy them from me. I dont see these being viewed as anything more than bullion for quite awhile. But then again I dont get the concept of "First Strike MS 70" 2006 SAEs. I cant justify their premiums. To me it is bullion until a great deal of time has passed and some history has developed. After writing this and thinking more about it, I think I will get my two very young daughters one each and put them away for them. Buying gold for youngsters is a good idea no matter what form it is in. |
Re: NEED PCGS population Numbers on SPOUSES
As a bullion coin, the early relatively high mintage first spouses are great... they trader lower to spot than gold eagles or buffalos and are pure 24k gold.
Look at the price performance of the leading low-mintage gold commems. Their ONLY appeal is their low mintage relative to other gold coins. The Jackie Robinson unc., the Capitol Visitor Center go for alot of money. Recently the pt/au Bi-Metallic is red hot too. All are under 10K mintage, which over the last 100 years is an uncommon event for a gold coin, and there is no shortage of gold coin collectors. I chatted with a guy at a major coin show a couple weeks ago. He was really high on the 03 First Flight commem. because he claimed to know a "ton" were melted and are being melted now as gold rises. (They minted just over 10,100 of those). I told him the obvious problem is that we will never know how many were melted, and his response was to just wait and see how few would be coming up for sale in the coming years. Melting is a factor with unloved coins. Pt for example being so volatile with another spike over $2200 and people will be reporting Pt coin meltage. Who knows what the truth is but another dealer I think highly of sez gold eagle proofs are being melted right now. Silvertowne did say by themselves they melted down many of the early spouses. The only potential problem I can see w/ the spouses is that they are all crowded together at the bottom w/ no clear low-mintage king; short of a sudden cancellation of the program, the series cannot produce a "deep-key" that is say at least 25% lower mintage than the others, certainly nothing like the '95-W silver eagle. Right now the spouses are totally skewing the entire picture of modern gold coins. If the series continues even say 2 more years, than virtually the entire top-20 lowest mintage moderns will be dominated by them. That fact may harm the value of other established gold commems. more than harm the spouses themselves. The big advantage of the spouses is their very low risk. The only downside is the initial premium, which isn't very much when buying a coin to speculate on. The upside, if they perform like the J robinson, is potentially very big. |

Re: NEED PCGS population Numbers on SPOUSES
Great response HC.
The Jackie Robinson is something to think about. It is kind of ridiculous if you ask me, but it is getting typically around 5K when available. My thoughts were more on commems like the 1916 McKinley which had a mintage of 14K, is available very frequently and really hasn't increased much over the years. Your thoughts on a "key" were also much appreciated. I agree, no one coin will emerge. I am going to look at the First Flight more closely now to that you brought it up. |

I don't think I will be able to bring myself to buy one regardless, just on principle. Just looking at that coin gets my bood pressure up it's so so disgustingly PC imo. It's a perfect Obama era coin imo. I'm pretty sure it will definately be a new low PT W # if it's made. |
Re: NEED PCGS population Numbers on SPOUSES
Here's how I see the '09 Plat proof sales playing out, should it be offered:
First week will show the strongest sales, as many as 1000 or more. After that, freefall, w/ sickly Spouse-like weekly sales, 10-40 a week. This coin could be offered well into next summer or longer however. Being the only Pt coin offered for the year, Pt collectors do need it, but many may seek it aftermarket. Will it break 2253, is just a waiting game. The W-unc. are a closed series across the board, and I feel will be synonomous w/ low mintage looking back. Your strategy is pretty sound in my book. |
Re: NEED PCGS population Numbers on SPOUSES
Populations are great to know. However, remember that NON COLLECTOR that paid over 7.65 MILLION for the ONE legal 1933 Saint; well, they just slabbed 10 more now.
His was a MS65 Now they have 2 more of those for 3-MS65s 6 MS64s 1 AU details cleaned and the biggie ONE MS66 that's the finest graded to date. Now that means the worlds most expensive coin is tied with two MORE; and wow! NOW there is one greater. He just lost 5 million dollars IMVHO. Moral is don't play with the real rarities unless you can stand a POKE in the POCKETBOOK later on. Those that play make a quick buck and are NOT wise as serpents - lose their tailfeathers. :36_1_25::36_1_34::thumb.aspx::36_3_13: |
Re: NEED PCGS population Numbers on SPOUSES
Those amazing SPOUSES.
I bought a few of the pretty ones: Julia & Sarah thanks HC :36_1_32v: they are slabbed. |
Re: NEED PCGS population Numbers on SPOUSES
I do like the sub-series, the ones WITHOUT an actual spouse, and am seriously considering one of the Van Buren's Liberty coins. Could anybody (HS, Hernan, Mojo) comment on the UNC vs the Proof in terms of potential upside and future resale value.:coolbeer::clap2: TIA

Re: NEED PCGS population Numbers on SPOUSES
Who knows really, right?
In other words the TOTAL of 40,000 poulation for both coins before the first four - is now an average of 7,000 for the last 3 to 4 few coins. |

The concensus seems to be the UNC with lower mintages, I have two Van Buren's, see http://goldismoney.info/forums/showthread.php?t=389640 Personally i like the proofs better so the next one I buy will be proof. |
